BEING A MODEL DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PT 2: WHAT CAN I DO DURING THE PANDEMIC TO KEEP CLIENTS LOOKING AT ME?
As an agent in New York I’m still talking to clients even thought the business had virtually shot down completely. I’m happy to see that clients are having conversations on how to find creative solutions to sell their clothes. They are looking at ways to send models clothes and shoot themselves, seeing who has a roommate who is a photographer, shooting editorials via facebook or zoom. Its pretty cool. People are finding a way and there is some work out there. But Im constantly watching my talent on social media and see while many are being more exciting than ever speaking to the world, many others are simply doing nothing. I’ve asked many models to send me new digitals from their home and a lot of them have not. You can either take this quarantine break a vacation or you can take it as motivation to beat the rest.
How much do you want it?
Are you truly ambitious or do you want it served to you?
The models that the clients are going to pick for these few projects are the ones that are exciting, the ones that are making a difference, the ones that yell loudly “I AM A BRAND!”.
The rest will be left behind. If you’re one of these models simply waiting for it all to come back to you by doing nothing, I suggest you look at how you approached your modeling career when it up normal and perhaps there are some answers why you were not doing as well as you would have liked. And perhaps this isn’t the right business for you. Take a hard look.
There is a reason why we call stars “stars”. Because they are extraordinary, captivating, funny, interesting and charismatic. The rest are simply just models. Decide which you are.
Here is a quick list I made for you of what you can be doing while we are waiting for the business to come back:
Get in the best shape of your fucking life (as possible of course being in quarantine). Eat healthy. Exercise at home. You can either be one of thousands of models that start to get into shape when the doors open again and 3 months later you’re last in line or you can arrive 1st in line when jobs come back in unbelievable shape and take every job.
Be active on social media. If you’re not active you’re community will forget you. People have time to be entertained so entertain them. So maybe you don’t have new modeling pictures coming out to post. Show them who you are as a person just being you. Invite them into your life. Come up with challenges. Show us who you really are outside of posing. Take us on a journey. Create ideas that could go viral. That’s how the models that want to be superstars are thinking.
Show off your skills and talents. If you’re a dancer, dance. If you’re a musician, play. If you’re a singer, sing. If you box, box. Clients are asking me for models with other talents that they can showcase thru social media jobs. Don’t have one? Learn one. You got time. You can find unlimited courses online.
Learn. Have you ever stopped to think about how top models become top models? Sure you see some of your friends do nothing and they get plucked straight to the top. It’s frustrating and it’s real. If you’re not one of these maybe there’s another way to get there. There are winning strategies in every profession that exists. Start asking questions how can I do this? Who are my resources that I can talk to? Shockingly I would say 70% minimum of models don’t think to implement any strategy. Thats a lot of people you could be booking jobs over if you did. Lebron James practices a specific shot every day hundreds of times a day rain or shine, season or no season so at 3 seconds on the clock he wants the ball and knows he’s going to make it. That’s winning. Understanding the game of modeling and transforming into exactly what the clients are looking for is not hard. But you have to search for it. Keep in touch with your agent! Make sure they aren’t forgetting you. Make sure they know how beautiful you look right now. Send them videos and digitals. Let them know if you have particular talents, if you have a space to shoot yourself, if you have professional equipment. Hey let them know if you have a cute boyfriend or girlfriend to shoot with! Make your agents job easy to sell you in this tough time.
Remember:
-Right now clients are searching for who the person is behind the pose. Show us that person.
-Scream out your personality and skills to the world
-The shy and lazy models will get left behind and forgotten.
-Don’t be last in line when the business is back.
